Surf Fishing Schools

2012 marked the 19th year for the Outer Banks Surf Fishing School. The School is a unique program that offers a comprehensive introduction to surf fishing. Hands-on "classroom" sessions and instructional sessions on the beach are combined with fishing the surf on Hatteras Island.  During the beach fishing days, you will have plenty of time for one-on-one sessions with the instructors.

Regrettably, this school will not be held in 2013. Possibly, the program will resume in the near future.  Contact Joe for more information.

SAMPLE SCHEDULE OF PAST SURF FISHING SCHOOLS

Instructors are experienced surf fishing experts and skilled “hands-on” teachers who offer friendly, personal instruction in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The program is geared toward beginners, but experienced surfcasters will learn valuable information that will help them put more fish on the beach!

THURSDAY
Each school begins at 6 pm on Thursday evening, with a discussion of the program schedule and an overview of Outer Banks fishing opportunities from the Gulf Stream to the soundside backwaters.  After the classroom session we’ll enjoy a casual "get acquainted" social and swap a few fish tales.

FRIDAY
The classroom day begins at 8:30 am. Lunch is provided.  We adjourn around 4:30 pm. Dinner is on your own.

SATURDAY
A full day of instruction and fishing on the beach.  Meet around 6 am and return around 4:30.  Dinner is on your own.

SUNDAY
We head to the beach again and return around 11 am for a final wrap-up session and more door prize give-aways.

Topics covered include Fish Identification, Rods & Reels, Lures & Baits, Knot Tying, Terminal Tackle, Beach Driving and Reading the Beach

Everyone will receive an autographed copy of the Second Edition of Joe Malat’s book “Surf Fishing” and our sponsors provide some sample hooks, rigs and a few lures.

Participants will need to provide their own rod and reel, but all bait is provided during the fishing days.

A North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License is required. To save some time while you are on the Outer Banks, we strongly recommend you make the purchase in advance. For information about the CRFL visit www.ncfisheries.net or call 1-800-682-2632.

An Off Road Vehicle (ORV) beach driving permit is now required by anglers who drive vehicles on beaches within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This permit will be required for school participants planning to drive on the beach.  as OF 2013 an annual permit is $120.00.  A seven day permit is $50.00.  Permits may be obtained only from the Park Service at a few different locations on the Outer Banks. For more info visit: www.nps.gov/caha/index.htm and click on “Off Road Vehicle Use.”

Accommodations are not included in the tuition.   For a list of available motels, hotels and cottages go to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau at http://www.outerbanks.org.
